The city on the Crimean peninsula was known as the main military base of the Russian fleet on the Black Sea in the past. Until 1996 it was closed to the public. Today, Sevastopol mainly serves as a seaport, industrial, scientific and technical, and recreational centre. The city has a rich historical background – you won’t have a chance to explore all the sights just in one day. In a close proximity to Sevastopol there is Inkerman with the medieval fortress and the cave monastery, the ruins of Chersonesus (an ancient Greek colony), museums, monuments, cathedrals, and of course, you can take a cruise ship to enjoy all these amazing places.
