Lake Verkhneye (the Upper Pond), previously known as the Oberteich, was created by the Teutonic Knights as a fish pond in 1270. At the beginning of the 20th century it became a leisure area: along its shores there were public baths, cafes and shops, and the bottom of the pond was lined with a thick layer of sea sand. The residents came here to swim and sunbathe. Opposite the Upper Pond there was an English landscape park (currently the territory of the Yunost Park with a beautiful rose garden and an open-air cinema.
