Sackheim Gate was built in the 19th century and was used as a checkpoint at the entrance to the city. After the defensive wall had been removed, it was no longer a part of the city defence. When the architectural monument was passed to the city administration, some casemates were demolished and a residential building was added to the gate. Some organizations occupied the place after but Sackheim Gate gained its popularity when the Kaliningrad Union of Photo Artists together with curators started up an art platform there. Modern art, festivals and lectures – the gate became meaningful and found its own identity. In 2017 the gallery was closed, and the future of the building is currently unknown.
